Sorry, Trump: TIME's Person Of The Year Is 'The Silence Breakers'

TIME magazine's person of the year isn't a person at all; it's a movement.

When we all look back at 2017, we're all going to remember the flood of sexual harassment allegations that came with it. And instead of putting the spotlight on the perpetrators, TIME wanted to highlight the individuals that helped build a safe environment where people can come forward with their stories.

Meet "The Silence Breakers."

Strawberry picker Isabel Pascual, lobbyist Adama Iwu, and former Uber engineer Susan Fowler grace the cover alongside actress Ashley Judd and singer Taylor Swift.

Other "Silence Breakers" include actress Rose McGowan, talk show host and political commentator Megyn Kelly, and actress Alyssa Milano, who launched the viral #MeToo movement.

"This is the fastest-moving social change we've seen in decades, and it began with individual acts of courage by hundreds of women, and some men, who came forward to tell their own stories of sexual harassment and assault," TIME editor-in-chief Edward Felsenthal explained on Tuesday morning's Today Show

"The image you see partially on the cover is of a woman we talked to, a hospital worker in the middle of the country who shared her story with us and some others but doesn't feel like she can come forward without threatening her livelihood," he added.

And while most people were satisfied with the cover, others weren't so thrilled that TIME featured Swift:

But the general consensus wasn't all negative: Sure, Swift never publicly denounced the hateful policies of President Donald Trump as many would have liked, but she did stand up for millions of sexual assault victims when she faced the radio DJ who groped her in court over the summer.

No matter how you feel about Swift being on the cover, we gotta give it up to TIME for this one. Instead of giving POTY to a controversial newsmaker like Trump — who incorrectly claimed that he took a "pass" on the title last week — they decided to shed light on the women who defined 2017: The Silence Breakers. Well played, TIME.
